Is Overlap a Good Thing?

For the last few months I’ve been trying my best to study for the next Microsoft exam in my quest for Certification Supremacy, but with work, family and other commitments, its been harder then I would have liked to get to the point where I’m almost ready to write an exam.

So I’m at the point finally where I’m ready to write the  70-685 (Windows 7, Enterprise Desktop Support Technician) exam and have noticed that there seems to be more then a bit of overlap with the 70-680 (Windows 7, Configuring) exam material.

The last three chapters in this book are covered in the last exam I wrote, and it has to be some of the driest stuff I’ve ever read, and trust me, I’ve read War and Peace, Jane Eyre and the like. I know that reading about methods AppLocker uses to restrict of permit the use of an application is necessary, but does it have to be a better sleep aide then Ambien.

I’ve been skimming over these chapters as its material I’ve already read, and while I think its a good idea to cover a topic to commit something to memory, but there must be a better way of going about it.

No decent Twitter apps for WinMo?

So I bit the bullet and signed up for data on my cell phone. With this came dreams of staying in contact with twitter, linkedin and facebook.

To my suprise, none of them have a decent client when compared to the iPhone and Blackberry. Will someone prove me wrong?

7 days with Windows 7

I’ve been meaning to give Windows 7 a try for a couple of weeks, and with my recent layoff I find myself with enough time to tinker.

When compared to Vista the interface seems alot cleaner, less cluttered. I like how it will maximize the screen differently if you drag a window to the top edge, or to the sides. Not once has the taskbar become cluttered, even when I had a bunch of apps running at the same time.

What’s really impressed me so far is Media Center. Those of you who know me, know that Media Center and me have had a long, and loving relationship. Microsoft took a good product and somehow made it better, faster, stronger (I just flashed on Kanye West saying that in my head). “Libraries” automatically index with any new media based upon its location on your machine or the network. The indexing runs silently in the background and doesn’t take 2 days to complete like in other versions.

Another thing that is suprising is how much quicker 7 run on my laptop when compared to Vista. Where Vista made doing anything a chore, on 7 it runs almost on par with Windows XP when it comes to performance. I know that this is only a Beta, and by the time Microsoft releases the full version it will go through many changes and iterations, but lets hope the perfomance stays stable.

I’ll post more detailed impressions after the honeymoon period is over and let you know whats truely going on here.

From Chaos Comes Order

I just finished building eight desks and I’m amazed at how many leftover materials are left over.

I know that Ikea makes ones life easier, but do they need to include a set of wrenches for each leg, or extra caps because you have an extension piece installed?

Don’t really have a problem with this, just wondering where I’m going to store all of this now.

Settlers of Catan, done

So, after two weeks of playing at work, I finally broke down and bought Settlers of Catan on my way home. Next thing to do is introduce Adrienne to the game.

Wish me luck 😉
